Review – The Harrowing of Twilight by JM Guillen

***Take note people – due to a booboo on behalf of the ARC provider, who shall remain nameless due to their usual awesomeness, the review for The Herald of Autumn is actually based on The Harrowing of Twilight and vice versa. Rather than rewrite both reviews (due to laziness), please consider that when reading criticisms. Both books are well worth reading.***

I read and reviewed The Herald of Autumn a couple of days in preparation for this ARC, 43300447.jpgas starting with book two of a series can be tough. I think this would have been a rare exception though, but that happens to be one of my peeves with this one. The end of THOA promised the return of Ciaran to help Tommy out on his quest to save his world. but there wasn’t even a mention. Maybe she’s coming back in book three.

Anyway, in THOT, Tommy is woken early from his seasonal slumber, and finds himself trapped by an age-old enemy, Old Man Coyote, a shaman of the first people. Instead of killing Tommy, the Old Man sets him on a quest to face a greater evil than in the previous book, one even Coyote can’t kill. There is, of course, more to this quest than meets the eye, and Tommy is constantly at war with himself as he tries to stay alive.

Tommy is left in our world, and it is interesting to see how he interacts with us puny humans, controlling our minds to extract needed information, but he still relies on out knowledge to help him out. The author also goes more in-depth on the Tellings, and how they can change one’s perception of the world. In addition, there is more detail on Tommy’s past and the nature of the “boon.”

So, the stakes are raised, the monsters make those in THOA look like Scooby Doo bad guys and the prose is always a pleasure. I’d like to see more of the Iron Blooded, and I’m hoping that’s coming in book three, but I’m enjoying this series anyway.
